What’s it really like to volunteer for a charity?

Nicola Wyllie, one of Furnishing Futures’ regular volunteers, tells us how she got involved, what giving her time and skills mean, and why helping a charity is so rewarding

So many of us read about a good cause but never make the step to taking action. What prompted you?

I’d been looking for a volunteering opportunity for a while. I run a small holiday let business and have spare time now my children are older and I wanted to use that time purposefully. Working in a charity shop didn’t really appeal; I wanted to get a little more involved with the work of a charity and with a cause that was in line with my passions and values. I started following Furnishing Futures on Instagram and saw that they were looking for volunteers, so I applied via their website.

What is it about Furnishing Futures that speaks to you?

It combines one of my interests, interior design, with my passion for supporting other women; it’s a perfect fit in that respect. But what is most special is being involved in something that’s making a real difference to women and children’s lives.

Has volunteering been what you expected?

Yes, and so much more. I first came to help out as a one-off in the warehouse, sorting and putting beds together that had been donated. But it’s developed into a more regular commitment helping to keep the warehouse organised and working with the team on installations. There has been a lot of flat-pack building which is always a challenge but fun.

What’s the best thing about working with Furnishing Futures?

Working with amazing women who are making such a difference in the community. I feel part of a great team, and having been a stay-at-home mum and small business owner for quite a long time it’s such a good feeling to be part of something bigger. I’m learning so much about myself but also about the experience of other women, and feel lucky to be part of something so positive for change.

And the most challenging?

Seeing first-hand the really difficult, sometimes impossible, positions women are left in to try and survive and bring up their families after suffering so much trauma. But that’s why Furnishing Futures is so important.

What advice would you give to someone who would like to give their time or skills to a good cause but don’t know where to start?

Begin by following charities that support causes that are important to you. See what they are doing and consider whether you have any skills that might be useful to them – often they just need pairs of hands. Charities’ websites are a great source of information and will usually have details on how you can help and what volunteering opportunities are available.
