Get your garden spring ready

My Cottage Garden

Read time:

25th February 2025

As we move towards warmer weather, it’s time to prepare your outdoor space – whether it’s a balcony, large garden or urban oasis – for spring

Have an idea for what you want to grow and where. For instant gratification, it’s also time to pressure wash any hard landscaping that’s had a winter layer of dirt, rain and grime – so clean composite decking, York stone, decks and paving to give your outdoor space an immediate lift. Also wash plant pots, outdoor furniture and even your shed if you have one.

Get out the pruning shears

Using sharp shears, loppers or a saw, cut away any of the damaged growth or dead branches from trees and shrubs that have died over winter. Most shrubs and roses can also be pruned around now, but don’t prune azaleas: these should always be pruned after flowering to avoid removing any flower buds. If you have hydrangeas, check the type as this determines how to prune them.

Check your tools and equipment

Tools and equipment stored over the winter months need to be inspected before the growing season begins. Replace or repair any broken tools and give them all a clean with mild soap and warm water. Hosing down larger pieces such as rakes or shovels is a good idea too. While you’re about it, remember to clean gardening gloves. Use a wire brush and damp cloth to clean wooden handles of handheld equipment and treat clean, dry handles with mineral oil to avoid splintering.

Take an inventory of seeds and plants

Check bulbs, seeds or propagation cuttings that you saved from previous seasons to avoid buying seeds you don’t need – plenty remain viable for years. Donate any you don’t want this year, or share and swap with fellow gardeners.

Plan the look

Once you’ve got your inventory, it’s time for the creative part – how you want your outdoor space to look and feel. Check the type of soil you have, how the sun moves across the space and the location of your seating/dining areas. Choose a colour palette and consider aromas too; adding herbs or ‘edimentals’ (ornamental plants that you can also eat, such as chives and violas) for a layered, beautiful and productive outdoor space.
