The prize includes a two-night stay for two people, plus bed and breakfast, worth £350.

The Bull Inn is the brainchild of Geetie Singh-Watson, who opened the first certified organic pub in London in 1998 after becoming disillusioned at the lack of sustainability in the restaurant trade.

‘We run the business following the planet, people, profit ethos, which we’ve distilled into a set of No-Bull Rules,’ says Geetie. ‘These govern what we buy, how we trade, and how we work as a team to deliver a deeply radical, ethical and values-driven business.’

In practice, this means the kitchen serves organic, seasonal, simple meals, and the interiors are thought through and environmentally conscious. ‘We worked with reclaimed furniture, reworked vintage fabrics and collections of antique market finds so that our luxury bedrooms would celebrate the uniqueness of our beautiful 18th-century inn,’ says Phillipa Hughes, managing director at The Bull.

‘Our organic Greenfibres bed linen comes from across the road, the handcrafted mattresses are made in Exeter by Naturalmat using organic Dartmoor wool, and our bathroom flooring is made from linseed and hemp.’

The ground floor of the pub is heated via a heat recapture system, harnessing the heat from the kitchen and recycling it, with solar panels heating the hot water for the bedrooms. ‘We compost, use wooden chopping boards and eco sponges, and ban cling film in the kitchen. Our waste is managed by zero to landfill, our electric is supplied by Ecotricity, phone lines by the Phone Co-op and insurance by Naturesave,’ explains Phillipa. ‘Basically, if we can find a greener way, we do it.’
