Hand-dyed tablecloth

Dye old linens using natural techniques with vegetables and even flowers. There are lots of tutorials online, and it’s a lovely way to breathe life into old linens and doilies. I dyed this tablecloth and napkin using avocado skins, for a dusky, vintage pink.

Sourcebook

  • Linens: Scour charity shops for fabric and linens to experiment with
  • Crockery: Find similar at Vintage Farmhouse Antiques
  • Vintage paste buckle: Grace Decorative have a good selection
  • Candleholder: Browse on Etsy for vintage pieces

Gift wrap trim

I love wrapping tiny gifts in plain brown paper, and then making them jewel-bright by adorning in silk ribbon and finishing off with a vintage button or tiny brooch. Or for a more rustic look, make tiny wreaths from snippings of fir tree to attach to the top of your parcel.

Sourcebook

  • Recycled silk ribbon and velvet holly-leaf: From The Old Haberdashery or visit VV Rouleaux for a large selection of ribbons and trimmings
  • Vintage buttons and brooches: Etsy is a great source for these

Painted baubles

Create bespoke decorations using your favourite colours, ribbons and sparkling treasures. I painted these plain ceramic decorations with Fusion™ Mineral Paint and used a glue gun to attach old buttons and brooches. Make ribbon by cutting up strips of fabric and hang your baubles above a mirror or mantelpiece as an alternative to a Christmas tree.

Sourcebook

  • Fusion™ Mineral Paint: Background panel in Seaside; decorations (left to right): Renfrew Blue, Metallic Brushed Steel, Liberty Blue, Metallic Copper, Renfrew Blue, Liberty Blue, Metallic Copper, Liberty Blue
  • Plain ceramic decorations and papier-mache hanging star: From Hobbycraft

Festive glass jars

I’ve been looking for a little ladder for a while to add to my prop cupboard, so I was really happy to find this one, with it’s pretty wash of blue paint. Here I’ve hung a beautiful swathe of greenery and a few baubles. In addition, I’ve created simple decorative pieces from glass jars of various sizes, filling with pine cones, a string of fairy lights and a few tea lights, as well as turning one into a lantern with a twist of wire.

Sourcebook

  • Vintage ladder: Hunt at auctions, on Gumtree or eBay
  • Glass vases: Garden Trading has similar recycled glass vases
  • Fairy lights: Available at Lights4Fun
  • Tea-light holders: I use old glass tumblers and jars collected from charity shops
